Phnom Tamao Zoo Cambodia

Phnom Tamao ZooThis is a 1200 hectares zoo and wildlife rescue centre located 30 kilometres southeast of Phnom Penh in Tro Pang Sap village, Tro Pang Sap commune, Ba Ti district, Takeo province Cambodia.

The zoo itself covers 80 hectares, the remainder has been reserved for its future extension and development.

The sanctuary is continually undergoing improvements and strives to provide suitable habits for its larger animals.

It was set up to preserve and rescue rare and endangered local wildlife. Some rare species housed here, including tigers, leopards, a lion and several species of exotic birds. At least two dozen of the species found here are endangered.

Phnom Tamao ZooThe majority of confiscated or donated animals are unable, due to a variety of reasons, to be released in the wild and are therefore housed at the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre (PTWRC).

The hope is that these animals will contribute to the gene pool in future wildlife rehabilitation programs.

Phnom Ta Mao is by far the largest zoo in Cambodia and the influx of visitors testifies to this. This area has Cambodia Hotels give your choice...

It was officially opened by Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen in 2000, although it had been running for some five years previously.

PTWRC is currently the only official sanctuary in the country.

One of the biggest enclosures is the sun bear enclosure, now with an infant Malayan Sun bear confiscated in a raid by WildAid's Wilderness Protection Mobile Unit (WPMU) in Stung Treng province in February 2005.

The bear, only a month old and weighing less than ten pounds, was taken from a well known wildlife trader, Y Banka. The WPMU took the infant bear to the PTWRC where it joined other rescued bears in the bear enclosure.

Shopping in Cambodia

Shopping in CambodiaThere are a wide variety of items available for purchase in Cambodia. The country was once well-known for its superior silk weaving, metal work and woodcarving. After decades of neglect, many of these arts are being revived.

Visitors can find silver items, jewellery, gems, colourful cloth for sarongs and hats (variegated silks), wood carving, paper mach masks, stone copies of ancient Khmer art, brass and bronze figurines and oil paintings in the different markets and shops on main avenue in the larger cities.

he traditional clothing for both men and women is the krama, a long, narrow checked silk or cotton cloth available in most markets and shops.

ewellery is generally not up to international standards for design and workmanship and buyers should use caution when purchasing gold and gems. Bargaining is essential for all souvenir shopping, it travellers are to obtain reasonable prices. Reductions of up to 20 percent are possible.

Cambodian SilkA number of rehabilitation programmes have sprung up since the eighties, such as the gift shop at Wat Thanh in Phnom Penh, a co-op that trains Cambodians disabled by land mines in making attractive items out of silk and cotton fabrics, rattan, bamboo, wood and clays. The result is a pleasing selection of purses and handbags, clothing, furnishings, paintings and many other items. This area has Cambodia Hotels give your choice...

Preah Vihear Cambodia

Preah Vihear CambodiaIn at least five years, more likely ten years from now, Preah Vihear province is going to be one of Cambodia major tourist destinations.

Today, it remains one of Cambodia most sparsely populated provinces, home to jungles and scrub forest, and a small, dusty provincial capital that is but a mere village.

But Preah Vihear also happens to have three major temple sites. Until recent years, the three main sites (Preah Vihear, Koh Ker, and Preah Khan aka Bakan) were accessible only to the most hardy and determined of travelers. But roads have been built, mines removed, and jungle cleared.

Preah Vihear is bordered by Stung Treng to the east, Kompong Thom to the south, Siem Reap to the southwest, Oddar Meanchey to the northwest, and Thailand to the north.

Access to the province is by road only and at present there are only two decent roads into the province, from the west via Oddar Meanchey province and from the south from Kompong Thom. There is a road to Stung Treng, which in the dry season is rather easy on a motorbike, but is otherwise not a viable route to take.

With the exception of Preah Vihear, Koh Ker, and the town of Tbeng Meanchey, this province is not suitable for Cambodia novices unless you are in the accompaniment of some kind of guide with firsthand knowledge of the area. This area has Cambodia Hotels give your choice...

There are virutally no facilities anywhere, most of the roads are wretched ox cart tracks through the jungle, and the province is one of the most heavily mined in the country. These silent killers are saturated along the border and you can also assume that any temple that hasn't been properly cleared by one of the mine clearance agencies will have mines around it.

Festival of the Reversing Current (Bon Om Tuk) Cambodia November 2006

Festival of the Reversing CurrentStrangely, the current of the Tonle Sap river, which runs through Phnom Penh Cambodia from the Tonle Sap Lake to the Mekong, switches direction each November.

During the heyday of the Khmer Empire, the rulers were thought to have the power to effect this reversal; nowadays, it's the occasion for fabulous boat races on the river at Phnom Penh Cambodia in Asia. This area has Cambodia Hotels give your choice...

The festival always takes place around the full moon in November. Each boat is paddled by 40 rowers and decorated with incredible care and attention.

Normally, the racing boats are kept safe and sound inside the Buddhist temple precincts. The prows are carved into naga heads, which are symbolic figures in Hindu and Buddhist mythology, representing rainbows, fertility and water.

On the first day, eyes are painted onto the prows, and more than 100 boats assemble on the Mekong. The rowers are kept in time by a skipper who beats out the rhythm using a ceremonial paddle. The boats traditionally carry "fools", who keep the onlookers amused with satirical jokes. Then for three days, the canoes race against each other in pairs until a final winner is declared.

As the sun sets on the last day of the festival, the grand finale makes this one of the greatest spectacles the world can offer. All the boats line up on the Mekong and the most beautifully decorated vessel then sails calmly out alone into the centre of the river where it performs the "cutting of the string" ceremony. Only when this has been completed can the people be sure they have dutifully honoured the mighty Mekong and ensured that the floods are over for the year.
